As it says on my (old) About page, the comic was inspired by a combination of an offhand comment by Squidi, and me having an excess of ideas that weren't right for Soap. However there are a number of other comics that either directly or indirectly influenced me writing this.
- Dinosaur Comics (Qwantz) - Dino comics inspired me in two ways. Firstly, it's a terrific minimalist comic. Every day, it uses the exact same images, but with different dialogue. It's absolutely brilliant. It explores interesting issues every day, and...well, if I could be half as brilliant as Dinosaur Comics, I would die a happy man. Secondly, I attempted to steal its site design. Obviously I was going for a much simpler design, but the similarities are there.
- Cyanide and Happiness - I only remembered about CaH a week after I'd drawn up the first 30 comics, but then I was struck by the similarities between that comic and mine. Obviously they try a bit harder, with actual faces and such. And it takes 3 people for them to do what I can do with one. But both have a similar sense of anti-humour, obviously theirs being vastly superior.
- White Ninja - White Ninja's combination of success and brilliant anti-humour persuaded me to take a shot at it myself. What's more, upon writing about 27 of the bastards, I read a few out to my cousin and my sister. My sister, having a similar sense of humour to me, cracked up as often as I did, however my cousin remained unequivocally unamused. He obviously didn't get anti-humour, so I set him on the White Ninja archives. After 30 or so, he was as keen on anti-humour as the rest of us.
- Skinny Panda - Skinny Panda, as well as being a nice character-based comic, has interesting side comics based entirely around stick figures. His stick figures are drawn in a manner that actually portrays emotions, whereas in Stickies, the stick figures are drawn as quickly as possible so that I can get on to the next one, but I still consider him inspiration.
It's worth noting that this comic was made a few years before anyone had heard of xkcd. Please stop accusing me of ripping him off.
